Sexual Health Q&A

Which symptoms can impact sexual health in men?

Men’s sexual health and function primarily rely on a hormone called testosterone. Low testosterone is at the root of many sexual health issues affecting men, but it isn’t the only possible cause. You might experience sexual health issues because of substance use, chronic diseases, mental health concerns, or problems within your relationship.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common symptom impacting men’s sexual health. ED happens when you either cannot achieve or maintain an erection firm enough for sex. Other sexual health concerns for men include premature ejaculation and low libido.

These sexual function issues are separate from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), which can affect both men and women. For men, STDs often do not cause symptoms but might cause painful urination, discharge, or swollen testicles.

Which symptoms can impact sexual health in women?

Women’s sexual function primarily involves the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Sexual dysfunction may stem from imbalances with these hormones, like during menopause. Women’s sexual dysfunction can also arise because of psychological disorders or trauma, chronic diseases, or substance use.

Some common sexual dysfunction symptoms in women are:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Pain during sex
  • Anorgasmia (inability to orgasm)
  • Vaginismus
  • Low libido

Women’s sexual dysfunction isn’t the same as STDs from bacterial, viral, or fungal pathogens. STDs don’t always cause symptoms in women, but when they do, they might include burning, vaginal discharge, and spotting or bleeding.

How are sexual health concerns treated?

Sexual dysfunction is treatable through personalized care that considers the cause or causes of your symptoms. Sometimes, lifestyle changes alone are enough to alleviate symptoms like erectile dysfunction in men or vaginal dryness in women. If there is a psychological basis for your symptoms, you might benefit from psychological counseling or therapy.

Hormone replacement therapy can treat sexual dysfunction in men or women related to hormone imbalances due to low testosterone or menopause. Men’s hormone replacement therapy involves replenishing testosterone levels, while women’s hormone replacement therapy is primarily used for menopause symptoms from low estrogen and/or progesterone.

The team at Enlift Health Medical Clinic can guide your treatment based on your primary concerns, overall health, and the main cause of your sexual dysfunction.
